DRC Accomplishments 2020 - 2021
With your help, the Devils River Conservancy has made great progress over the past year. As an organization, we survived the first year of the pandemic, grew stronger, and remained mission-focused to preserve and protect the Devils River.
A few highlights of the year:
- Our national award-winning advocacy campaign, Don’t Blow It, Texas, played a critical role in passing the Lone Star Infrastructure Protection Act. This new law impedes the Chinese developers in Val Verde County from building wind farms around the Devils River by preventing prohibiting them from connecting to their connection to the Texas electrical grid.
- During the 2021 legislative session, we supported legislation to protect our few remaining pristine streams from wastewater discharge. While the bill did not pass, our advocacy work has elevated the importance of the issue. We are laying the groundwork for success in the 2023 legislation session.
- We launched critical spring flow research in the headwaters of the Devils River watershed to further understand the aquifer and springs.
- Recognizing the need to unite the Devils River research community and expand our understanding of the watershed resources, we formed the Devils River Research Working Group. The Working gGroup brings state agencies and research organizations together to identify and address research gaps and provide critical data for policy decisions.
- We are supporting the Devils River Habitat Model, the first-ever gain-loss study of the Devils River river. The year-long study will provide insight into river flow patterns and groundwater contributions.
- We launched the successful Devils River Advocate membership program. Are you a member yet?
